Middle Eastern Dishes Every Food Lover Should Try

Middle Eastern cuisine brings together bold spices, fresh herbs, grilled meats, fragrant rice, creamy dips, and sweet pastries. From hummus and falafel to shawarma, Mandi, tabbouleh, and baklava, there is plenty to explore for anyone discovering these flavours for the first time. Each dish has its own ingredients, preparation style, and regional character, making Middle Eastern food much more varied than a few familiar favourites. If you are planning to explore the cuisine, knowing which dishes to try first can make your experience easier.

Here are some popular Middle Eastern dishes worth adding to your food list.

1. Hummus

Hummus is one of the most familiar Middle Eastern dishes and a common part of a mezze spread. It is made by blending cooked chickpeas with tahini, lemon juice, garlic, and other seasonings until smooth and creamy.

The flavour is rich but balanced, with the nuttiness of tahini and the fresh acidity of lemon. Hummus is often served with warm pita bread, vegetables, or as part of a larger meal.

It can also be topped with olive oil, spices, herbs, or other ingredients to give the dish a different flavour.

2. Falafel

Falafel is a popular choice for anyone looking for a filling vegetarian option. These small patties or balls are traditionally made from ground chickpeas or fava beans combined with herbs, garlic, onions, and spices.

The outside is usually crisp after frying, while the inside stays soft and flavourful. Falafel can be served inside pita bread with vegetables and sauces, on a plate with sides, or as part of a mezze meal.

Its combination of texture, herbs, and spices makes it easy to understand why falafel has become popular far beyond the Middle East.

3. Shawarma

Shawarma is one of the most recognizable Middle Eastern street foods. Thin slices of seasoned meat are slowly cooked on a vertical spit, allowing the outer layers to develop a rich, roasted flavour.

Chicken, beef, and lamb are commonly used, depending on the restaurant and regional style. The meat can be placed inside flatbread with vegetables, pickles, and sauces such as garlic sauce or tahini.

A good shawarma brings several flavours together in one bite. The savoury meat, fresh vegetables, tangy pickles, and creamy sauce create a combination that works well for a quick meal or a shared platter.

4. Mandi

Mandi deserves a place on any list of traditional Middle Eastern food worth trying. Originally associated with Yemen, Mandi is known for its fragrant rice and tender meat, usually chicken or lamb.

The meat is cooked slowly with a blend of spices, while the rice absorbs the aroma and flavour from the cooking process. The result is a comforting dish that is often served on a large platter and enjoyed with family or friends.

Mandi is also a dish that shows the importance of rice, meat, spices, and communal dining in Middle Eastern cuisine.

5. Tabbouleh

Tabbouleh brings a fresh and lighter element to a Middle Eastern meal. It is traditionally prepared with finely chopped parsley, tomatoes, mint, onion, bulgur, lemon juice, and olive oil.

Fresh herbs are at the heart of this salad, giving it a bright flavour that pairs well with grilled meats, rice dishes, and mezze.

Tabbouleh is often served cold or at room temperature, making it a refreshing side for heavier dishes.

6. Shakshuka

Shakshuka is a simple yet flavourful dish made with eggs cooked in a tomato based sauce. Tomatoes are commonly combined with peppers, onions, garlic, cumin, and other spices before the eggs are added.

The eggs cook directly in the sauce, allowing the flavours to come together in the pan. It is often served with bread that can be used to scoop up the sauce and eggs.

Shakshuka is a popular breakfast or brunch choice, but its warm, hearty flavour also makes it suitable at other times of the day.

7. Maqluba

Maqluba is a traditional rice dish known for the way it is presented. Rice, vegetables, and meat are cooked together in a pot before the entire dish is carefully flipped onto a serving plate.

The name itself refers to the idea of turning the dish upside down.

Eggplant, potatoes, cauliflower, chicken, or lamb may be included depending on the recipe. Once flipped, the rice forms the top while the meat and vegetables sit underneath, creating an impressive centrepiece for a family meal.

8. Chicken and Lamb Platters

A Middle Eastern meal does not always need to be complicated. A well prepared chicken or lamb platter can bring together seasoned meat, fragrant rice, sauces, salad, and bread in one meal.

Lamb is often appreciated for its rich flavour, while chicken works well with the spices and marinades used in many traditional recipes.

Platters are also ideal for sharing, especially when dining with family or friends. If you are comparing different Mandi options, our guide to lamb Mandi vs. chicken Mandi can help you understand what to expect from each.

9. Baklava

After savoury dishes, it is worth saving room for dessert. Baklava is made with layers of thin phyllo pastry, chopped nuts, and a sweet syrup or honey based mixture.

The pastry provides a delicate, flaky texture while the nuts add crunch and richness. Different regions use different combinations of nuts, spices, syrups, and flavourings.

A small piece can be enough after a full meal because of its rich sweetness.

10. Kunafa

Kunafa is another well known Middle Eastern dessert, especially popular during celebrations and family gatherings.

It is made with thin pastry strands or a similar shredded pastry base combined with cheese or other fillings, then baked and finished with sweet syrup. Pistachios are often used as a topping.

The combination of crisp pastry, soft filling, syrup, and nuts gives kunafa a texture that stands out from other Middle Eastern desserts.
